RE: Idling a Diesel

4) All you have to do is talk to a few guys with their big DP's about how long they idle their engines and see how defensive they get to understand that a major reason they idle their engines is to look cool. The sound of that big expensive diesel idling is music to his ego. Steve, I would really be interested in where you get the insight and information to make such a general statement. Especially the part about, "... a major reason they idle their engines is to look cool." Do I detect some sort of animosity, - or is is jealousy - toward DP owners? It does indeed take a few minutes to get the air up on a DP if it has been sitting a few days, much more than a PU that can be cranked and moved almost immediately. But that is now what you said. What you did was basically insult every DP owner out here. I have a DP and don't idle it any more than necessary. It is loud and neither I nor the folks around us enjoy hearing it run.

RE: Keyless Entry

I have s similar situation with the keyless locks on my F-250 crew cab. This truck was bought new in 1996 and I have used the key fob device since then. A while back I tried to open it with the key and it would not turn. I believe what has happened in the key has worn down as has the ignition and the door locks tumblers are still 'new' - unworn might be a better term. I have no idea what I will do if the fob thing ever quits working.

RE: It starts tonight !!!..Waiting on night II

This is an interesting question. Seems they focus on the sports world and, of course, ABC stars. From sports how about a baseball player? Derek Jeter would be popular or Alex Rodriguez. Tennis could send Serena Williams, or Maria Sharapova, or perhaps Andy Roddick or Roger Federer. From ABC I think Christina Applegate from Samantha Who? would be good. The token "mature" star could be Sally Field (Let's stay out of the 70 and 80 year old stars please!)Any of the Grey's Anatomy stars would be popular, male or female. And then, of course, the ever popular Deperate Housewives cast. The comedians could be represented by Tim Allen or Tom Arnold, and the ever popular Las Vegas show star could be Criss Angel, Lance Burton, or David Copperfield. I think we might get a good show out of those choices. I still want to see what Misty May Treanor can do. She started slow but was improving. OH YEAH!! I can see it now...Hulk Hogan and Dusty Rhoades from the WWF. Rosie O'Donnell from...(where is that thing from?) Geraldo Rivera anf Maury Povich from the sensationalist group. Judge Judy from the mean team. Hannaty and Colmes from the 'we never shut up even after the election is over' group. Billy Mays from the 'I yell even when I whisper' group. This definitely has potential... :B

RE: Arizona to Charleston SC

I'm not sure I would worry a lot about snow and such after getting out of the mountains in New Mexico. We do get a little snow and ice around the first week in March here in N Georgia, but it is almost always gone in a day or so. It has been a few years since I have been west of Shreveport but as I recall, I-20 was not terrible, but not that great either. East of Birmingham is a rough section of construction for a few miles and then another (I think) someplace around Pell City. I-10 is pretty rough for miles and miles west bound but I believe since Katrina the eastbound side has had some work done -Help me here guys-?? I might just take a chance on I-20 and get to see the new baby a bit quicker

RE: What are your plans for '09??

Glad that the economy has not strangled travle completely. We are headed to S Georgia and Florida after Christmas for a week or so, just to break the winter boredom. Then in April to a rally (iRV2) in Mt Airy, NC. Around the last of April or fist of May we start west to S Dakota and the Black Hills, where we will be at Custer State park until August sometime. Depending on how things are then, we want to head north and swing up through the Canadian Rockies and back down through Washington and Oregon.

RE: College football - week 14

Well, we play Tech this saturday. Ought to beat them but the way this season has gone, I would not be surprised to see a pi$$ant eat a bail of hay. Bad news is that our rifle arm QB Stafford is making noise that he may turn pro after the season. We were counting on him for another year, but we do have another prospect in the wings. It just seems to me we never 'arrive' we are always 'rebuilding' or 'on the verge'. I'll be glad to see this season come to a close (as far as our team goes) Now, who will play for the BCS championship? I sure do like the looks of 'Bama.

RE: shared ownership

The only partnership I would be in on is with my wife. That way I get to do all the maintenance work and don't have to bother with complaining about it. ;) I have seen a partnership work on a plane, but not sure it is feasible on a MH where all parties want to use it when the weather is good. I might suggest a corporation be formed, the corporation pay for the coach and a set amount per day be charged each partner for the use of the coach. The corp. be responsible for all maintenance. Of course then someone would have make sure that got done and that one person did not bring the coach back empty when he may have picked it up full. Naw, :( too much trouble.

RE: Full Timer Financing

I did not follow my own advice when we bought the present coach, so I might be a bit of a hypocrit - for this I apologize. We will take a huge hit on the new coach in depreciation the first few years. With the market like it is right now, folks are selling some super nice MHs for what is owned on them and the banks are even selling them for less than what is owed. It is a buyers market now. I might just make some offers that might seem low and make them contingent on his finding me a financer at a decent rate. You never know how desperate a dealership might be from walking in. If we had waited (hindsite is always 20/20) a couple or three months we could have bought for less money OR, bought a nicer coach for the same money. We were lucky to be able to pay cash and the salesman thought we were crazy, 'you know you can use the interest you pay as a deduction don't you?'. You can use the a PERCENTAGE of the interest. In fairness to him he did go on to say that the cash, invested and drawing a decent rate might make more interest than we would save. I don't know if that was right or not, I really don't worry about it now that it is all over with.

RE: What tip do you have to save us money to keep camping?

You could try showering together to save water and electric but that gets kinda dicey in state park bathhouses sometimes ;) Seriously we have found we can stay for extended periods for little or no cost by volunteering as camp hosts. There is very little work where we host, simply collect money, give directions and be nice to people. We had three months last year in S Dakota and probably actually 'worked' less than 12 hours. Now we were on the site about 4-6 hours each day but were free to take trips off if we notified the park supervisors first.

Little holiday tension building a few days early guys? :) Good to blow off some steam, but remember what we pay to use this site. Somebody is footing the bill - and with the economic situation like it is right now maybe they are going to start looking at cutting costs.

RE: Flathead Lake MT - 35 vs 93

Have not been on 35, but 93 was not a problem a few years back when we headed up to Kalispell and Glacier. There were a few settlements around the lake that slowed us down some, but it was a good ride. We did it in a MH with a towed.

RE: Eagle, Colorado

Sorry to take so long to get back on this. They made it back and were fine. Said the snow was actually a benefit in smoothing out the rough dirt trail they had to drive. Ranch owner failed to provide hay for the horses for 2 days and when they finally delivered a roll to the corral, one ate all night. THe next day he would not get up, they finally got him up and notified the people at the ranch the horse was sick (probably foundered) and our guys walked the horse down the mountain to the main house. When they got ready to leave the lady tried to make our guy pay for a horse. Said the horse did not get any better after a few days doctoring and they shot it!! Turns out that one of the ranch hands (think it was a son of the owner) had three big game tickets he was trying to fill and was too busy hunting and did not take care of the hay delivery or the horses. Right now, our guys are so PO's they may not even go back next year even though they have been invited. I hope they fired the kid, but I suspect that was not the case.

RE: Miles drivin in a day

I left Pratt, Kansas early one morning, came through Memphis, Birmingham, Atlanta and ended up in N Georgia - about 1150 miles. I was much younger then and was driving a Ford PU. This put me out of commission for a few days of R&R. My longest driving a MH was in July of 07 and about 800 miles. My son and I have been doing marathon drives for years when we had limited time to get some place. Now that I have retired it is so much easier to do 3-4 hundred miles and then relax for the night. He and some of his friend will leave on a Friday night and drive straight through about 100 miles west of Denver, pulling cargo (hunting) trailers. I believe the plan next year is to stop overnight in Kansas some place. Maybe he realizes he is not as young as he used to be ;)
